events at our office

In an effort to build awareness and relations with the San Francisco community, our office will be hosting its first ever meetup! If you’re an infra coder, love to automate things, or just wanna meet others while checking out our office then join us at the Target Technology Innovation Center on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 6:30 PM. Come hear developers talk about Elasticsearch, as well as techniques and tools for benchmarking, autoscaling and deployment automation. If you have no clue what any of those terms mean, don’t worry, because neither do I. We’re especially excited given Target is sponsoring the event. So come join us, and if you see a Target person, come say hello. As always, we’re looking to hire data scientists and engineers, so feel free to apply on our website. events outside the office

One thing I’ve found fascinating while working at Target is how much time I spend on activities and events outside the office. Just last week, my team and I, along with many Target employees across the SF Bay Area convened at a local elementary school to makeover their library. As many of you are aware, Target donates $4 million a week and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours per year to our local communities with a large focus on supporting education. I was dumbfounded when I first heard those figures, but after witnessing the turnout and support from all the team members in the area, it all made sense to me why Target was so special and how we’re able to accomplish such a tremendous feat. As part of the library makeover, everyone was all-hands-on-deck as we installed new shelves, tables and computers and distributed thousands of books and education materials […]

the sf “innovation” center

According to Wikipedia, an innovation is “something original, new, and important – in whatever field – that breaks in to (or obtains a foothold in) a market or society.” It is something that thousands of startup companies in Silicon Valley dream to achieve in what seems like an exponentially faster pace than ever before. For larger companies, like Target, innovation is crucial in being able to stay ahead of the curve. In recent years, many large companies have gone as far as establishing labs or “skunkworks projects” in Silicon Valley to be close to the hotbed of innovation. One of the reasons I love Target is because we took the step to be one of those companies. The San Francisco Innovation Center opened up shop at the end of 2012 with the purpose of being one of many teams within the company to understand what innovation means for Target-, a […]

A Journey to the West – Target San Francisco!

When I found out that Target was opening up an Innovation Center in San Francisco, the doorstep of Silicon Valley, my immediate reaction was, “it’s about time,” followed by, “where do I sign up?” Growing up in the small town of Murray Hill, NJ, I’ve always been drawn to technology and innovation. The fact that I lived across the street from Bell Laboratories, an incubator of innovation and the birthplace of the transistor, was likely just a coincidence. However, as America’s brightest scientific minds gradually began migrating west to Silicon Valley, so did the epicenter of innovation. After college, I eagerly moved “out west” to work at some of the hottest companies in tech.  I quickly became spoiled by a warm, sunny climate almost year round (I once counted five months straight without a single drop of rain), as well as the laid-back, sometimes eclectic, work environments within which I found […]
