I have to tell you, I’m pretty lucky. I’ve got a really good gig. I work within Talent Acquisition, in a role where I support external partnerships and events. I’ve been in my role for a few years and worked on many different types of partnerships, but it was about a year and a half ago when I was asked “Would you be willing to travel to San Francisco? We’re hosting our first Tech Meetup at our office there and we’d like you to help.” I hadn’t personally been to a Meetup before, but was excited and interested to learn more.
Upon arrival to San Francisco, I went to a local Meetup with a co-worker so I could see what they were all about. It was so casual, a different world from the events I typically planned like career fairs and national conferences. There were boxes of pizza stacked to the side, and a TV with a computer hooked up. That’s it. The goal was truly to all connect with each other, share information and learn. I loved it (and got to see some really cool apps people were working on). And the next night, I had a blast being a part of our own Meetup.
After helping with that successful first Target Tech Meetup in San Francisco, I had the opportunity to help with Tech Meetups in Minneapolis. They have definitely evolved- from our first one with about 30 people in a small meeting room, to our Meetup group (Skyway Software Symposium) now having over 700 members and moving to our larger Target Plaza Commons space. I have learned a lot about the technologies Target uses to make shopping the best it can be for our guests. I have met some amazing people in the technology industry (both local and national, internal and external) that are passionate about their craft. It’s exciting. I love that we can be part of the movement here in Minneapolis to build a united tech community, and that I get the privilege to play a role in that.
We welcome anyone interested in learning to come check out our Tech Meetups and see what they are all about! Learning, eating and networking – what more can you ask for?
