A Step Ahead

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Didn’t we just get out of school … why is Target already setting up for back to school and back to college?” Well the answer is simple. We don’t want you to enjoy your summer. Okay, I’m joking (you’ll get used to my sarcasm quickly). The real answer is we have to stay one step ahead! We always stay a season ahead so our guests can be armed with the best deals as soon as possible. Who wants to be the one to move back into their dorm without the coolest new gear because the local retailer didn’t have it out in time?

It takes a ton of strategizing, organizing and planning to pull off a successful Back to College season at Target stores. We hold planning meetings, assign leaders to “captain” a different crucial aspect to the event as well as partner with our headquarters and distribution teams to assure a smooth and successful season. The store teams create very detailed plans-  down to what fun events, games and food we will provide the team weekly during the season to keep everyone up beat and engaged.

The best part about this season is I get to manage some of the highest volume freight flow in the country! . My store is in the middle an area of over 300,000 students and 60 colleges/universities. This means all those bright trendy college essentials come in by the truckloads. Next time you see one of those huge Target trucks driving down the highway, imagine it being full of futons, mini fridges, microwaves or even hangers. Yes, a truck full of hangers!

The merchandise flies off the shelf just as fast as it comes in. Have you ever seen someone walking out of a Target with 4 carts FULL of stuff? It will happen dozens of times over the next couple months here.

All of this is made possible by the strategic planning of so many different teams throughout the company. Headquarters sets up the product mix months and months in advance with all the marketing and promotions to go with it. The distribution centers create freight flow plans to allocate the merchandise to nearly 1800 Target stores nationwide. And the store teams execute plans to get the products our guests need on the shelves for them when they need it. But none of it could happen if we all didn’t stay a step ahead. This is one of the most fast paced and exciting times of my job and I love it! Let the season begin!
