I am on the threshold of finishing up my fourth week as an intern at Target. Every day has been crammed with new challenges and obstacles; new memories and hilarious moments.
Frequently I feel that no matter how often I work, there is still so much that I need to learn. When considering Target’s “language” of acronyms, their fast-paced routine, and what seems like an infinite number of products, it is easy to get overwhelmed.
Recently our store hired several new team members, and today I had the opportunity to help with orientation. It was empowering to be able to answer all of their questions and give them advice. I knew exactly how they felt—excited, nervous, and confused—because I literally was feeling the exact same way less than one month ago.
The incredible part about working with the new team members was that it made me realize how much I have learned since I started here at Target. Thanks to my amazing mentor, all of the team leaders, and every team member that has gone out of their way to teach me different parts of the store, I finally think I’m “getting it.”
Target’s optimistic, inclusive environment encourages team members to “settle for more”. In every section of the store there is constantly a list of things that we are improving or changing. Although the workload can seem tough occasionally, it is extremely rewarding every time someone successfully tries something new or finishes a new project because the leaders at Target do an outstanding job of recognizing their performance.
Whether it is saying congratulations over the walkie, writing a card, or making a small thank you gift, learning and succeeding is always rewarded with recognition. It is because of this that there is such a positive environment here at Target, a “vibe” that no other company seems to possess.
