Learning Target Pharmacy and a Whole Lot More

My name is Maryam and I’m a University of Florida 2nd year Doctorate of Pharmacy student, and I am Pharmacy Intern in Port Orange, Florida. Each and every day brings excitement, fun and tons of learning! The pharmacy internship at Target attracted me because of its well-structured, diverse, and interesting setup as pharmacy interns learn everything about the store, not just pharmacy which differed from many of the other retail competitors. At first, I was a bit puzzled as to why a pharmacy intern needs to know the complete  in’s and out’s of the store from serving as Guest Service Team Leader for a day on the front lines to helping out logistics in stocking the aisles in the early morning hours, but I quickly realized that the successful business model of Target is due to three main factors: innovation, integration and investment. Innovation in transforming the retail business model by integrating team members with the different departments of the store and investing in their growth and talent throughout their relationship with Target.  However, one of the biggest charms of Target is the fact that we share a common connection with community service initiatives-I balance many volunteer activities within my very busy schedule throughout the year in what I call my “give back, move forward” initiative.

Target has provided me with the resources to expand my skill set and knowledge while integrating my own personal twist through my experiences; I certainly have to say that this internship has been great so far. I am looking forward to partnering with my mentor as well as the other Executive Team Leaders in the store to learn as much as possible about everything, not just the pharmacy. My philosophy is learning anything will help you in some way in the future even though it doesn’t relate to what you may be going to school for, or what you see yourself doing in the next five years. Target sees the reason most of us became pharmacists in the first place-to take care of people. I love to go out in the aisles to help our guests with any medication questions they may have from what they should use for wasp bites to what’s the best medication they should take for a migraine.

Lastly, what I found most interesting of all is the culture at Target. I soon found myself immersed in a work environment that is fun to come to everyday (I love my team!), exciting with new adventures (getting a visit from a flash mob!) and opportunities for growth and leadership (feedback, feedback, and more feedback). Working for a company that is so invested in their team members is quite refreshing to say the least. Can’t wait to see what I’ll be learning and experiencing next!
