Celebrate more birthdays!

Everyone likes to celebrate birthdays, right? Celebrating more birthdays is a goal I share with Relay for Life. I recently attended Relay for Life at the Blaine High School in Blaine, Minnesota with peers and team members from our distribution center. Relay for Life is an annual event supported by Target and other organizations. It is an opportunity to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remembered lost ones, and fight back against disease with the American Cancer Society.

The event was from 5pm to 5am on a Friday night. Teams formed to fight back against cancer brought out tents to camp out. There were tents set up by different teams and organizations with food, games, and even a silent auction! At the Target tent, we had some healthy food options including sandwiches, vegetables, and fruit. We also had hula hoops, ladder golf, and other lawn games to play.

In the middle of the tents there was a track for teams and individuals to walk and celebrate or remember those that have been impacted by cancer. The track was outlined with luminarias which are white paper bags that were decorated to support these loved ones. Once at the track, sand was put into the bags and a candle was lit inside. For a few weeks before Relay for Life, we offered stations at the distribution center supplied with bags and art supplies for our team to create luminarias for loved ones we want to remember or celebrate.

The Survivors Lap around the track had to be the most inspirational part of Relay for Life. Each survivor of cancer that was present introduced themselves, the type of cancer, and how long they have been cancer free. They then walked together as a group around the track to celebrate their victory!

It was amazing to be part of such a great cause and share it with the team from T-551 and I’m looking forward to not only celebrating more of my own birthdays but also more birthdays for my family and friends!

This is a great point Julia! Both of my parents are cancer survivors and we will be celebrating their 65th and 69th birthdays this fall. I am so fortunate they are both happy and healthy! Cheers to continuing to celebrate birthdays 🙂

Thank you for your help getting the word and the purpose of Relay out there. There’s a lot that goes into planning an event such as Relay, and Target should be extremely proud to be associated with such an event. Both of my parents are cancer survivors, celebrating their 41st wedding anniversary today…thank goodness for more birthdays!
